The truck is also insanely well designed. Everything about it is so well made, the chassis seems like a better design even over the larger models, it's more sealed up and solid. The body mount is the best in the industry by far. The gyro is a serious upgrade almost entirely worth it on its own. I can't say enough great things about the truck. Arrma did such an amazing job on it, and with the upgrades over the regular grom, it really is the full package of durability and performance straight out of the box.
Now, for the negatives (because everything in life has down sides). The truck suffers from its small scale, in that it can't really do rough terrain. It gets thrown around a lot by any rocks, bumps and sudden obstacles. Short grass, finer gravel and dirt, and street are its favorite places, ironically making it the world's best RC rally car that's not a rally car. Of course it's easy to forget that this is a short course truck that wants a dirt track and not a full blown Baja truck.
The other main frustration was the battery situation being quite limited by the truck's provided connector and artificially limited chassis space. I don't play the game with proprietary equipment particularly when it comes to Spektrum equipment, so the connector issue was solved easily by converting the ESC over to the good Ole XT60. The bigger issue was the chassis space. It seems it was deliberately designed to force you into Spektrum's batteries given that they seemed to be the only 3s that would fit, and they are very small capacity 3s so runtime is .....small. There is very clearly the ability to make more room to fit more batteries on it, especially in the vertical space as the body bracing is absolute overkill and can be trimmed back a bit. Dropping down to 2s, but a higher C rating was the best stop gap between 2s and 3s I could manage with more small (but higher capacity) battery options in that space. It worked out as even on this 2s, the speed was mind blowing.
Other then that, I can't recommend this truck enough. I've had an absolute blast with it and it's easily a favorite with all the neighborhood kids.
All metal gear diffs, super strong dog bones, a-arms, have stumbled it and nothing has broken minus the dreaded micro servo and servo saver. To make it worst its a 23T servo while almost all aftermarket servo savers are 25T. I am unable to go one full battery before the servo saver gets wobbly and servo is all over the place. Have installed spacers, installed a different ss, and nothing. The only upside is because I am unable to really run it is almost brand new, lol. Am done with 1/16th scale, off it goes to maretplace. Luckily I bought it with a 20% special sale at my LHS so I will not be on a total loss. Why selling it, the metal micro servo that fits costs $55 and the ss for it is about $15, am done with it.
Mojave Grom is INSANELY fast for it's size. On 3s it is a literal bullet zipping up and down my driveway. The DSC stability control is also a really nice feature, I've yet to have any issues with traction rolling (something the larger scale SCT's suffer from). It's also incredibly durable, I've accidentally sent it for some rolls and tumbles and it always comes away from the inevitable bash like a champion.
That being said I have seen numerous reviews that the servo-horn has been repeatedly over tightened at the factory leading to pre-mature failure of the servo horn. Be sure to check and adjust as nesscessary! In the case of failure don't hesitate to reach out to customer service as they are very good to offer a replacement part in the event of failure.
10/10 I would recomend Mojave Grom to anyone interested in RC, new folks and seasoned veterans alike. At this price point you absolutely cannont beat the brushless set-up.
