pittershawnI just finished reading Zen in the Art of Writing: Releasing the Creative Genius Within You by Ray Bradbury. I believe it is a book every writer should read. Bradbury’s career has spanned more than 50 years. He is possibly one of the most prolific writers in the literary arena.

He takes the reader through his life as a writer, sharing his challenges and triumphs, while giving them pointers on what makes a great writer. Enough can’t be said about writing daily. Throughout his entire life he wrote everyday, no less than 1,000 words per day.

As I read his life lessons, I realized that writing daily really is very important. It is akin to breathing. A moment cannot go by when we are no breathing or we are dead. For a writer, writing should be like breathing. Not a day should go by without us putting pen to paper, or we will die. Writing should be our lifeline throughout our entire lives.

I sadly admit that I do not write daily as I should. But I’ve been given new inspiration to do what will make me a better writer. It is only through practice that we become greater than we were yesterday.

I’ve made a commitment to write at least 1,000 words per day. I think it is through this practice that writing will become a subconscious action where I no longer need to fish around in my mind for the basics, but easily float through writing, needing only to work out ideas, not the mechanics of the written word.

I invite authors to read his work. It is inspiring and will help to rid your space of that dreaded writers’ block. It will also help you to enhance your art and create works that will be unforgettable.
