Blogging about books, writing, and publishing…in black
View From APOOO, October 2008
Hello and welcome to another edition of the View From APOOO.
I LOVE Fall. Cooler days. Football season. Fall Foliage. Colorful Sweaters. Baking cookies. Making homemade soups. Cuddling up with the one I love. Cuddling up with a good book. First frost…and no more hay fever.
This is the time of year I look forward to getting my read on. I’ve read some good books lately to include:
Cross Country by James Patterson
Going Down South by Bonnie Glover
Run by Ann Patchett
Song Yet Sung by James McBride–This will definitely be a TOP 10 for this year.

In addition to reading a few good books, I’m also enjoying reading book blogs. Now that I’ve set up Google Reader for all my blogs…it’s so much more manageable and easy for me to read my favorites…especially when I’m short on time. Anyone else use Google Reader…if you don’t use a reader…I highly recommend this one it is a wonderful tool for reading/organizing blogs.
During my blog travels, I came across the following article:
Signing Off the Weird World of Book Signing–If I had to sign 65,000 books, I guess I would want to hire a ghost signer also.
The crime writer James Ellroy famously signed every one of 65,000 first-edition copies of his 1996 memoir My Dark Places.
Although that was not the case for crime writer James Ellroy, there is a publishing house who went on Craig’s list to find volunteers who could fake signatures for several of their authors! Is that wild or what? Pretty ingenuous though if they can pull it off…but hmmm isn’t that like fraud? I wonder how many authors would give their right arm to be able to SELL and authograph 65M copies of ONE title!
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Are you an author, what say you-would you be willing to sign any number of books or would you rather hire someone else to do it? Why or Why not?
Authors, what’s the most books have you signed in one sitting?
Readers, what’s a signed book worth to you?
Readers, what’s the last author book signing you went to?
Readers, has the number of appearances decreased, increased or remained the same for you over the last 12 months? If changed, why or why not?
HOLLA…APOOO wants to hear from you.

I would sign them, as many as I could, worse case scenario, I would get a stamp with MY signature on it…
Authors, what’s the most books have you signed in one sitting?
The first time I did a signing in my hometown, I signed over 200. Learned to at least sign my name in advance. But it was a good day.
Readers, what’s a signed book worth to you?
Doesn't matter to me.
Readers, what’s the last author book signing you went to?
Susan L Taylor.
Blessings!

I do recall hearing somewhere that in the Golden Age of Movies, most "autographed" pictures were signed by the star's mother or assistant, but I think that's dishonest. Nor do I expect it to ever be a problem for me. You've got to receive thousands of requests for autographed books for this to become problematic.
The most books I signed in one sitting was probably 85-90. A good signing, yes, but hardly hand cramp material!

I'm always willing to sign books; though, it ain't like people are banging down my door to get them. I had a well-known author ask me how I handle all my fan email and I had to chuckle. Very easily!
Last signing I went to was Nikki Giovanni's. She was great.
I really treasure books I have signed by Bebe Moore Campbell, Alice Walker, James McBride and others.

Yes, yes, yes! I LOVE the fall season, too. It is definitely "reading" season. It's always a good idea to want your work published right at the fall or winter seasons. I think more books are sold during these seasons (especially fall).
