Writing is an easy thing to procrastinate about. I know I can fritter my time away and boom, no word count, no story or novel. I thought I’d share a few of my quick and dirty tips to beat the procrastination habit with you.
1. A timer can be your best friend.
- Try ten minute writing bursts. Write on your project for ten minutes, as fast as possible, anything that comes into your head. This is a good way to get started.
- Take a ten minute break between bursts and do something enjoyable or check your e-mail.
- Start doing thirty minutes writing stretches, then go for an hour with ten or fifteen minute breaks in between. You’ll be surprised how much you’ll accomplish relatively painlessly using timed stretches.
2. Perfectionism and editing as is great grist for procrastination. Clear your mind of the nagging inner editor that wants to go over and over everything, and write freely.
3. Prepare to write beforehand. Before you go to bed is a good time to get your story outlines in order or plan the next scene.
4. Edit during your downtimes, for instance, while everybody else is watching television or after dinner. Editing takes less energy than the act of creating.
5. Consider early am writing stretches before your day usually starts.
These are the procrastination tips that work for me. Maybe they’ll work for you too
