Last week I attended the 15th anniversary of the Romance Slam Jam Conference and had a great time. It’s an annual conference where readers and authors of Black romance get together to celebrate their love of Black romance.
During one of the discussions, a reader was saying that she expected authors at book signings to collect email addresses of the folks who came by their booth and to court the reader. This got me to thinking about all of the emails I receive from authors who have harvested my email addresses over the years. I’m talking about those who if you send an email about whatever, they automatically place you on their email list or they collect your email address someway other than asking for it and then send you promotional material.
I’m often asked what my writing goals are, and until recently always drew a blank. I mean, I want my writing to improve with each piece I pen. I want to explore genres and writing styles, but those aren’t goals.
Well, I’ve figured it out. My goal is to become an “Again And Again” author. There [...]
As an author, I always strive to improve my writing skills. I want each piece I create to be better than the last. It amazes me how many seasoned authors act as if they know it all and couldn’t use a little improvement themselves, but that’s an entirely different post. This post is about little [...]
The other day I was on the phone with another author who was telling me about her book release in a few weeks. I was so happy for her and of course can’t wait to get the book. Anywhoo, I was telling her I plan to self publish a book in the near future, and [...]
I was at Barns & Noble’s Web site, minding my own self’s business, as I always do, when I decided to download their free eBook software onto my computer. I enjoy eBooks and would like to purchase an eReader. I figured this program may give me insight into how the Nook works. I plan on [...]
I was sitting in the living room, minding my own self’s business, as I always do, when I began to open the box containing the edits of my “Top Secret” novel when I suddenly became nervous. Man, what if my editor hated it? Oh yeah, I stepped out of the box and wrote a novel [...]
I spend a lot of time reading. I absolutely love, love, love reading a good book. Anywhoooo, I was in the gym on the stationary bike riding, reading and minding my own self’s business, as I always do, when about thirty minutes into my ride, I was angry. I’m talking so angry I wanted the [...]
The other day I was reading a novel and minding my own self’s business, as I always do, when I received a call from one of my mentees. Anywhoo, for those of you who don’t know, I’m a developmental editor in one of my other lives. My mentee decided she wanted to try to developmentally [...]
The other day I was surfing the net and minding my own self’s business—as I always do—when I decided to see if there were any good sales over at Amazon. I don’t know about you, but I had never just searched in books before. So I selected books from the pull down menu and didn’t [...]
The other day I was sitting at home editing a book and minding my own self’s business—as I always do—when I needed a little break. I decided to hop my happy little butt on over to an eBook store and order a short story to read for pleasure. I didn’t want anything heavy, so chose [...]
