My second novel, Hunger, has just come out. What that means in practical terms is that I have shifted from being a private citizen who composes meaningful passages on her computer to being a literary Don King or President Clinton: meeting, hugging, and thanking readers for their new or continued support and championing my novel as the book everyone has been waiting for.
The shift is not subtle. Suddenly, I must develop clever and compelling ways of describing the message and essence of my book. I must figure out why I’ve written what I’ve written and be ready for folks to love it or hate it.
